So recently(ok, alittle while ago...im alittle slow) th Vatican released the Ten Commandments of Driving:
| QUOTE |
1. You shall not kill.
2. The road shall be for you a means of communion between people and not of mortal harm.
3. Courtesy, uprightness and prudence will help you deal with unforeseen events.
4. Be charitable and help your neighbor in need, especially victims of accidents.
5. Cars shall not be for you an expression of power and domination, and an occasion of sin.
6. Charitably convince the young and not so young not to drive when they are not in a fitting condition to do so.
7. Support the families of accident victims.
8. Bring guilty motorists and their victims together, at the appropriate time, so that they can undergo the liberating experience of forgiveness.
9. On the road, protect the more vulnerable party.
10. Feel responsible toward others. |
This really REALLY angers me. Why the hell is the Vatican, considered by many to be one of the moral leaders in the world, taking its time to talk about driving? Did they just forget about the AIDS epidemic? What about Sudan and the countless other human atrocities around the world? The War in Iraq? How about the thousands of just regular homeless people? I mean, REALLY? Driving? REALLY?
...
 your thoughts?

Because the original ten pretty much had that covered.

Have you done much driving in Italy?
In all seriousness, though, I don't see how this in any way detracts from other issues you bring up. It's not like the Vatican is capable of having only one opinion at a time. The Church tries very hard to be relevant to the lives of all people, and driving plays a big role in the routine of many.

The Vatican probably took 10 minutes to come up with those...
It's not a big deal, a little odd though.

I agree. Focusing on one issue, such as AIDS, to the exclusion of all others seems a little too focused. Why can't they address other issues that affect peoples' daily lives?

As a Catholic I feel obligated to weigh in on this.
Yes, this is silly. That being said as others have already pointed out it doesn't mean that is all the Church has an opinion on. And the way the vatican works is that the pope probably didn't even see this and someone three or four levels below him created it and sent it out.
It probably warranted as much publicity as it's been getting because of how ridiculous it is.

Hey, I think those are all good rules to drive by. I don't see how it's ridiculous.
maxnight1189 - July 3, 2007 04:53 AM (GMT)
Im not saying the rules are ridiculous, im saying that i think it detracts from all the other important things the Vatican should and, i guess, is talking about. Its like, when you hear a reporter talking about some controversial issue and then about the Paris Hilton story it makes (me atleast) rethink my opinion and standing of the news source.
I dont know....maybe Im more upset with people in general that this is even something that could be addressed. I mean, dont you think its common decency to "Feel responsible toward others" or help someone when they're in an accident? It just seems to me like one of those things you take for granted that someones going to do.

It's not the rules themselves that are ridiculous, but the manner in which they are presented.
The church considers itself to be a moral authority and as such has an obligation to tell us as Catholics, how to be moral when driving. I've got no quarrel with that.
What I find ridiculous is 1) the amount of press this got and 2) that I tend to agree with max on that I like what they're saying here, but I wished they'd weighed in on something a bit more... well weighty before publishing this.
Some stance on a moral obligation to ensure Africa receives adequate anti-malaria funding, and then the driving thing. Then again given the nature of the press these days the driving commandments probably still would have received more comment.
