Title: Languages
Description: which would you learn

Boru - March 22, 2005 08:32 PM (GMT)
Spanish I'm already studying this on my own, but to be an effective community organizer I'm going to need to learn it
French and Italian Hell with learning spanish and what i know of Latin why not pick up a hat trick of living romance languages
Arabic I'd like to be able to read the Koran in the original language and not have to rely on a translation.
German If I decide at some point to get a Classics Phd I'll need to be able to at least read German, plus there are some philosphers that just don't translate well
Greek Modern, just for kicks and so I can go visit...
Chinese Probably mandarin dialect, and largely again just for kicks, though Japanese would be neat too... finally
Gaelic :irl: because my family is Irish.

I already understand spanish very well, and speak it alright.
For languages I'd like to learn, it would be Latin, Russian, and German. French maybe, and Iitalian isn't too hard to pick up with a soild base.

I have a decent grasp of Spanish, but I'd like to become fully fluent (which means I'll have to go abroad either during my junior year of college, or visit a Latin American country some other time). Other than Spanish, I'd like to learn the following languages:

-Sinhala (so I can go to Sri Lanka)
-Kiswahili
Lingala
French
Perhaps Kinyarwanda
^
That way if I ever go to central Africa (greatest area of interest) I would have a much easier time.

Well I'd like to nail down Chinese, Tagalog (language of the Philippines), and Spanish, in that order.

After that, it'd be cool to learn French, German and ancient Greek for philosophy.

I'd love to learn Arabic and Italian, as well.

Yea, learning a lang. is best done in the country where it is spoken. The summer before Junior year of high school, I went to Mexico alone (staying with my aunt and uncle who speak little english) I spoke very little spanish.

When I was done, it was hard adjusting back to english.

I am learning Spanish in school right now. Other languages I would like to learn would be some kind of oriental language.

Deltasix - March 23, 2005 09:55 PM (GMT)
Yea, and oriental lang would be neat, they are so totally different.

Still trying to learn German, pretty much useless unless you're translating literature. I would like to learn Spanish, too.

Finish learning English. Your language is the hardest I have ever tried to learn.

Deltasix - March 24, 2005 12:37 PM (GMT)
What language do you speak as of now?

Wingfoot - March 24, 2005 03:26 PM (GMT)
I'd so want to learn cockney rhyming slang, as opposed to the odd phrase that I know now

Currently, I'm learning German in school, but the language itself doesn't appeal to me.

So in college, I'll hopefully take up Spanish.

Learning
German
Hindi (self-teaching)

Want to Learn
Spanish
French
Japanese (perhaps)

I have a friend who speaks Hindi. He tried teaching me some (in return for some spanish) and none of it stuck. It is a very interesting sounding language though.

I was learning Gemran and french in school but then foolishly took french for GCSE. I find German much easier (which i've realised now). I'd love to perfect my german and get a basic understanding of spanish. i don't really care much for french

I've always wanted to learn Japanese. I watched a lot of anime and learned some simple phrases, but I just don't have the time or patience to learn something so different from the English language. There are a few phrases I recognize when they're said like: "Sumi masen" or "Ohayo gozaimasu" but I can't write it down or type it well. I like the sound of the language, but I doubt I'll ever be able to write it.

I learned some Spanish from highschool. I might have learned more if the teachers actually cared about the class learning anything instead of just passing a written test. All I can really remember is "Me llamo es Pablo" (Spanish name given at the beginning of the semester) and "Aqui" ("Here") which she made us say to be counted present for the day.

I'm not sure if you would count Leet (1337) as an actual language... but I can type both True and Normal leet (though I choose not to).
