Ay, I remember hearing about one of the first reporters killed recently. I forget her name but she was reporting on Russian abuses during the Chechen wars. It's not though too surprising given how quickly Russia became an oligarchical/mafia-run state soon after "communism" fell. Putin's just another thug in the lineup.
