Al-Jazeera service in English starts
By JIM KRANE, Associated Press Writer 39 minutes ago

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - Ten years after it started Arabic-language broadcasts that angered leaders in the region and Washington, Al-Jazeera on Wednesday launched an English-language news channel available in more than 80 million homes but lacking major U.S. distribution.

Al-Jazeera English went on the air at 3 p.m. (8 a.m. EST), broadcasting from the station's headquarters in Doha, capital of the tiny Persian Gulf state of Qatar.

A screen graphic with a clock ticking down the minutes gave way to a photo montage of the biggest news stories of the past decade and an announcer saying the new channel would be "setting the news agenda."

"It's Nov. 15th, a new era in television news," its anchor said.

While yes, Al-Jazeera is biased, just like AP tends to be biased, I want to see it. Unfortunately, even living in as news hungry an area as Washington DC, I can't get it on cable TV.

Why?
Propaganda. Thats the claim.

Nice to see that free speech is alive and well in the US...

I heard about plans to launch an English version of Al Jazeera a long time ago.

It's good to see it has been launched, although I have not checked my TV to see if it is available on Sky Digital.

Interestingly, you can get it on Satellite TV here. Just found that out.

Unfortunately, the neocon pricks at our local cable companies won't air it. Yet they air John Hagee's regular rants about how the Jews are more 'racially pure' than the Arabs.

Sometimes I just want to slap these neocon arseholes right in the kisser.

I'm not sure its neo-conservatism that drives them to not allow Al-Jazeera, but yeah, I do see your point.

What company do you use for cable, if I may ask?

Intifadah - February 5, 2007 08:29 PM (GMT)
Comcast. I called to see if they could specially provide it to me, and they said no. It's some sort of boycott by mainstream cable, I heard it on the news. They think it's pro-Arab propaganda.

Hey! Some of us just absolutely LOVE pro-Arab propaganda!!!

Yeah, that was the article I posted. I have the same deal with Comcast, rather annoying.

Aye, I agree....I can't get my Arab news and I'm dying here!!!

Al-Jazeera is actually less biased than Fox News. Yet they still air that. <_<

I can now get Russia today, an indian channel news channel (NX something or other), News in welsh, CCTV (china) and alot of american ones. I can also get France 24 which is funded by the french government with the purpose of providing a major news channel that isn't anglocentric. It changes from French to english throughout the day. Also for a while we've had EuroNews which is EU funded. Its just reels of film with audio in your nations language. all that AND al-jazeera normal and english. Plus tonnes of other for other languages and countries which i can't be bothered to list.

In conclusion - its fantastic!

You can get it fine in the US with satellite packages. Its just cable here that doesn't carry it.

My father's sister lives in the UK. She begged me to come there to live, and I'm still debating on it. However I think I may move there, because it seems that I'd fit in better there, plus there's more Arabs there, which is what I need, especially single Arab guys......lol

Yer, there are some large Muslim communities in London and some of our other big cities. You should bear in mind however that Muslim -non muslim relations here aren't all that great right now. But its probably better than in large parts of the US.

Intifadah - February 5, 2007 08:59 PM (GMT)
Yea I read that somewhere..... :(

jammyd01 - February 5, 2007 09:02 PM (GMT)
It certainly is a shame. But we're working on it ;)
